Response to Comment

EdisonLBM said in a comment,

"Perhaps bush went halfway because he realizes that the first thing needed for the reunification of the US is a little compromise?"

After trying unsuccessfully to answer in one comment, I chose to do it in a post on the matter.

OK. First of all the last thing we need right now is compromise. We need to put good men in government who value life and our Godly Heritage. Nothing less.
What do we want to do, put a kinda, ok sorta guy who might value life on the bench of the United States Supreme Court?

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Also, the Isrealites got in trouble time and time again for compromising with the evil people around them. No we do not need a comepromise.

EdisonLBM speaks about the "reunification of the (United States)" I should like to quote Abraham Lincoln.

"I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South."

A nation can either be all one thing or all the other. If cannot remain divided.

Mark 3:25 "If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

We can be a nation that values its unborn children in its national policy or we can be a nation that kills them off. We cannot be both.

While you conclusion, based on your evidence, at least, is correct, there is one outstanding problem with all of this – your evidence, if not outright wrong, is certainly misquoted.

Here are pieces of evidence that I have issues with:
1.“We need to put good men in government who value life and our Godly Heritage.”
Exactly what you mean by this confuses me – most of what is considered “Godly Heritage” is not really our actual heritage at all – for example, “In God We Trust” has only been on American dollar bills since the 50s, and the Pledge of Allegiance has only had a mention of God in it since the 50s as well. Furthermore, most good evidence points to the founding fathers being much less Christian than most modern Christians like to claim – see this page for evidence.

While I’m not saying having Christian judges or such is wrong, I am wondering, exactly, what you think this “Godly Heritage” is – after all, the United States, when founded, was created with the intention of separation Church and State, to, in James Madison’s words, make both Church and State exist in “greater purity.”

2. Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
I very much agree with you, but I really think you should look at yourself on this one. Do you really think the best way to overcome evil to do whatever it takes, even putting people with questionable ethics in power (see Karl Rove leaking a CIA op’s name to the press for political reasons, for example) and outright attacking those that disagree with you? That, to me, sounds much more like attempting to overcome evil with evil – I am attempting to overcome evil by reaching out to people, which I consider to be good.

3. Finally, your Lincoln quote concerns slavery. I didn’t bring that up, why did you? Do you really think that Lincoln is saying that the US, as a nation, can only work if we all agree on every issue for all time?

4. Mark 3:25 "If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.
Exactly. This. Is. The. Point. At some point here, we are going to have to, at very least, agree to disagree. Why must you force your opinion onto everyone? There is a difference between “division” and “different opinions,” and you refuse to see that – people, such as yourself, are causing division over simple differences of opinion.

Finally (and this is just a question) since you seem to “favor life” so much, how do you feel about the death penalty?

I love the scripture you chose here--may I put it in context? (bolding is mine for empahsis)

Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy; share tears when they're down. Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the great somebody.

Don't hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you've got it in you, get along with everybody. Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. "I'll do the judging," says God. "I'll take care of it."

Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he's thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don't let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.

Romans 12:14-21

To me God IS THE Judge.
I think I will leave the Supreme Court to him.

My job is to take a hungry liberal to lunch and reflect God's love to my lunch mate.
